Abbreviate (ab bre’ vi ate) vt., to shorten.
This is one of those words that don’t come up everyday, and its correct spelling does not come to mind so easily.
Please remember that there is a time and place for ‘abbreviations.’ They can be used in casual conversations and emails, but not in formal writings, such as term papers, compositions, opinion papers, thesis papers, legal papers, application letters, answering an email from a company or person to which you are applying, or in a customer correspondence from your company, just to name a few. Know when it’s safe to abbreviate, and keep your audience in mind when doing so.
Say What You Mean. Mean What You Say, and know when to spell it out!
